What algorithm is used to extract colors?

The tool uses median-cut color quantization, which divides the image color space into regions and picks the median color of each. This gives representative palette colors.

How many colors can be extracted?

You can extract between 3 and 12 colors in one pass.

Does the image get sent to a server?

No. All processing happens in your browser using the Canvas API. Your image is never uploaded anywhere.

Why does my palette include many near-identical grays?

Images with large neutral areas will have gray dominate the palette. Use the filter to exclude near-gray colors if you want only the chromatic tones.
