Clinical dosing tool, not a fitness target. IBW formulas were developed to estimate safe medication doses — not to define an appearance or weight-loss goal. They do not account for muscle mass, age, frame size, or body composition. Discuss personal weight goals with a qualified healthcare provider.
Summary
Enter your height and sex to see ideal body weight from four clinical formulas (Devine, Robinson, Miller, Hamwi) plus the BMI healthy range — in both kg and lbs.
How it works
- Devine (male): IBW = 50 + 2.3 × (inches above 60). Devine (female): IBW = 45.5 + 2.3 × (inches above 60).
- Robinson (male): IBW = 52 + 1.9 × (inches above 60). Robinson (female): IBW = 49 + 1.7 × (inches above 60).
- Miller (male): IBW = 56.2 + 1.41 × (inches above 60). Miller (female): IBW = 53.1 + 1.36 × (inches above 60).
- Hamwi (male): IBW = 48 + 2.7 × (inches above 60). Hamwi (female): IBW = 45.5 + 2.2 × (inches above 60).
- BMI healthy range: weight = BMI × height² (m²), using BMI 18.5 (lower) and 24.9 (upper).
- All results shown in both kg and lbs (1 kg = 2.20462 lbs).
Use cases
- Clinicians estimating drug dosing based on IBW rather than total body weight.
- Nurses and pharmacists cross-checking weight-based medication calculations.
- Patients curious about how their weight compares to clinical reference targets.
- Comparing multiple IBW formulas to understand the range of estimates.
- Physical therapists setting baseline weight targets during rehabilitation.
