Bright direct light means unobstructed sun rays hit the leaves — typically within 1–2 feet of a south- or west-facing window. Outdoors this would be called "full sun." Very few common houseplants want this; cacti and succulents are the main exception.

What is bright indirect light?

Bright indirect light is a well-lit spot where direct sun rays are blocked by a sheer curtain, a wall edge, or the plant sits a few feet back from a sunny window. Most popular houseplants — pothos, monsteras, fiddle-leaf figs — prefer this.

What is medium light?

Medium light describes spots 5–8 feet from a window, or directly in front of a north-facing window. You can read comfortably there without turning on a lamp, but the space does not feel bright. Many ferns, snake plants, and peace lilies handle this well.

Can any houseplant survive in low light?

No plant grows in true darkness, but some tolerate very dim conditions — such as ZZ plants, cast-iron plants, and pothos — with just ambient room light. Growth will be slow and watering needs drop significantly. Artificial grow lights can supplement if needed.

How accurate is the light level on my plant tag?

Nursery tags often say "low light" when the plant actually means "tolerates low light without dying immediately." Most plants grow best at the higher end of their stated range. If a plant looks leggy or stops growing, try moving it closer to a window.
