What is the difference between true airspeed and ground speed?

True Airspeed (TAS) is the speed of the aircraft relative to the surrounding air mass. Ground Speed (GS) is the speed relative to the ground. They differ because the air mass itself is moving (wind). A direct headwind subtracts from TAS to give GS; a direct tailwind adds to it.

What is wind correction angle?

Wind Correction Angle (WCA) is the number of degrees you crab into the wind so that your actual track over the ground matches your intended course. If the wind pushes you to the right, you point the nose slightly left (negative WCA means correct left). This calculator derives WCA from the wind triangle when you enter a heading.

What wind direction convention does this tool use?

Wind direction follows the standard aviation convention: the direction the wind is blowing FROM, measured in magnetic degrees (0–360). For example, a "270° wind" blows from the west toward the east.

Why is my ground speed higher than my TAS?

You have a tailwind component. When wind blows from behind the aircraft (relative to your heading), it adds to your TAS and increases ground speed above TAS.

Can ground speed ever be zero or negative?

Theoretically, if the headwind equals TAS the ground speed is zero — the aircraft hovers over one point. A stronger headwind would produce a negative ground speed (drifting backwards), though this is extremely rare for powered aircraft at cruise.
