What is the difference between within-row and between-row spacing?

Within-row spacing is the distance between adjacent trees in the same row. Between-row spacing is the distance between rows, typically wider to allow equipment or foot traffic and to ensure canopies from different rows do not shade each other.

Why does rootstock size matter so much for spacing?

Rootstock controls the eventual size of the tree. A dwarf rootstock keeps a tree to 8–10 ft tall and wide; a standard rootstock can reach 20–30 ft. Planting to the wrong spacing means either crowded, diseased trees or wasted land.

Can I plant closer than recommended?
