Why does one emoji show multiple codepoints?

Many emoji are sequences, not a single character. Flags combine two regional indicator letters, keycaps add a variation selector plus a combining keycap mark, and family or profession emoji join several base emoji with zero-width joiners (U+200D). Each part is listed separately.

What is the difference between the codepoint and the HTML entity?

The codepoint (U+1F600) is the Unicode identifier. The HTML entity (😀) is the same value written in the numeric character reference format browsers accept inside HTML markup.

Why are there both UTF-8 and UTF-16 breakdowns?

UTF-8 is the byte encoding used on the wire and in most files and databases. UTF-16 is how JavaScript strings and Windows APIs store characters internally, often as a surrogate pair for emoji outside the Basic Multilingual Plane. They are different byte-level representations of the same codepoint.

Is my pasted text sent to a server?

No. Everything, including the emoji name lookup, runs locally in your browser with a bundled name table. Nothing you paste is uploaded or stored anywhere.

What if an emoji shows "Unknown emoji"?
