EAN-13 (European Article Number) is the standard 13-digit barcode used on retail products worldwide. It is functionally equivalent to UPC-A with a leading digit, and is the format printed on most packaged goods.

How is the check digit calculated?

Each of the first 12 digits is multiplied by an alternating weight of 1 and 3, starting with weight 1 on the first digit. The sum is taken mod 10, and the check digit is whatever number rounds that sum up to the next multiple of 10.

Can I enter 13 digits instead of 12?

Yes. If you enter 13 digits, the tool checks whether the 13th digit matches the computed check digit and shows the corrected value if it does not.

Will this barcode scan with a real scanner?
