Summary

Enter an ordered IV rate in mL/hr and select the drip set factor to get the drops-per-minute count for a manual gravity infusion.

How it works

  1. Enter the prescribed infusion rate in mL per hour (mL/hr).
  2. Select the drop factor (gtt/mL) printed on the administration set packaging.
  3. Click Calculate — the tool divides mL/hr by 60, then multiplies by the drop factor.
  4. Read the drops-per-minute result and count that many drops in the drip chamber every 60 seconds.
  5. Use Reverse mode to enter an observed drip rate and get the equivalent mL/hr.
  6. Round to the nearest whole drop when setting the clamp on the IV tubing.

Use cases

  • Set a gravity IV drip when no infusion pump is available.
  • Cross-check a pump setting against a manual drop count at the bedside.
  • Calculate pediatric or neonatal infusion rates using a 60 gtt/mL microdrip set.
  • Verify a blood transfusion rate using a 10 gtt/mL blood administration set.
  • Teach nursing students the gtt/min formula with instant feedback.
  • Quickly switch between drip sets without recalculating by hand.
