What does collinear mean?

Collinear points are two or more points that lie on the same straight line. Any two points are always collinear; the interesting case is three or more.

What methods does this tool use?

It uses the slope method — checking that the slope between every consecutive pair of points is equal — and cross-validates with the signed triangle area method, where an area of zero confirms collinearity.

How does the area method work?

For three points (x1,y1), (x2,y2), (x3,y3), the signed area is 0.5 × |x1(y2−y3) + x2(y3−y1) + x3(y1−y2)|. A result of zero means the points are collinear.

What happens with vertical lines?

Vertical lines have undefined slope. The tool detects this case and reports the line as x = c rather than using slope-intercept form.

How many points can I check?

There is no hard limit. The tool checks all entered points against the line defined by the first two points. Enter as many as you need.

What input format is expected?

Enter one point per line as "x, y" — for example "3, 5" or "-2, 0.5". Integers and decimals are both accepted.
