Factors are based on IPCC 2006 Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories and widely referenced values: diesel 2.68 kg CO2e/L, petrol 2.31 kg CO2e/L, natural gas 2.04 kg CO2e/m³, electricity 0.42 kg CO2e/kWh (global average), beef cattle 70 kg CO2e/head/year enteric, dairy cattle 118 kg CO2e/head/year, sheep 8 kg CO2e/head/year, poultry 0.6 kg CO2e/head/year, nitrogen fertilizer 5.7 kg CO2e/kg N.

CO2 equivalent (CO2e) is a standardized unit that expresses the global warming potential of all greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, N2O, etc.) in terms of the equivalent amount of CO2. This allows different gases to be compared and summed on a single scale.

Why does the electricity factor vary by region?

The electricity emission factor depends on the energy mix of the local grid. Coal-heavy grids emit more CO2 per kWh than renewable-heavy grids. This calculator uses a global average of 0.42 kg CO2e/kWh. For country-specific results, use your national grid emission factor.

Are these figures exact for my farm?
