Summary

Enter patient weight, fluid indication, and drip set to calculate IV fluid infusion rate in mL/hr and drops/min for dogs, cats, and other veterinary patients.

How it works

  1. Select the animal species to apply species-specific maintenance rate constants.
  2. Enter the patient's body weight in kilograms or pounds.
  3. Choose the clinical indication: maintenance, mild dehydration, moderate dehydration, severe dehydration, or shock.
  4. For dehydration, the estimated fluid deficit is calculated and spread over the chosen replacement period.
  5. Select your IV drip set (10, 15, 20, or 60 drops/mL) to get the drop rate.
  6. Review the resulting mL/hr, total volume, and drops/min values before setting your pump.

Use cases

  • Calculate maintenance fluid rates for hospitalized dogs and cats.
  • Estimate rehydration volume and rate for dehydrated animals.
  • Determine shock bolus volumes for emergency fluid resuscitation.
  • Convert mL/hr to drops/min when using a gravity drip set without a pump.
  • Cross-check pump settings before starting or adjusting an IV infusion.
  • Teach veterinary students and technicians standard fluid therapy calculations.
  • Plan total daily fluid budgets for ICU patients.
