What is angle of view in photography?

Angle of view is the angular extent of a scene that a lens captures on a given sensor, measured in degrees. A 50 mm lens on full-frame has roughly 46° horizontal AOV — often called the "normal" view closest to human perception.

How is angle of view calculated?

AOV = 2 × arctan(sensor_dimension / (2 × focal_length)). Horizontal AOV uses sensor width, vertical uses sensor height, and diagonal uses the sensor diagonal (√(width² + height²)).
