What is the across-flats (A/F) dimension?

The across-flats dimension is the distance between two parallel flat faces of a hexagon bar. It is also called the wrench size or width across flats (WAF). Do not confuse it with the across-corners dimension, which is larger.

Which density values does this tool use?

Nickel 200/201: 8.89 g/cm³; Monel 400: 8.80 g/cm³; Inconel 600: 8.47 g/cm³; Inconel 625: 8.44 g/cm³; Hastelloy C-276: 8.89 g/cm³. These are standard published densities from ASM and material data sheets.

How is the cross-sectional area of a hexagon calculated?

For a regular hexagon with across-flats dimension A, the area is (√3 / 2) × A². This is equivalent to approximately 0.866025 × A². The calculator uses this formula internally.

Why does the result differ slightly from my supplier quote?

Minor differences arise from mill tolerances on the A/F dimension, surface finish allowances, and whether the supplier uses nominal or measured density. The theoretical weight from this tool is typically within 1–2% of actual weight.

Can I use this for stainless steel or other alloys?
