Summary
Germany levies Umsatzsteuer (sales tax), commonly called Mehrwertsteuer (MwSt), at a standard rate of 19% on most goods and services, and a reduced rate of 7% on essentials such as food, books, and public transport. This calculator works in both directions: enter a net (VAT-exclusive) price to find the VAT amount and gross total, or enter a gross (VAT-inclusive) price to extract the VAT component and underlying net price. Results update instantly as you type, and a built-in line-item table lets you total multiple positions — ideal for invoices and expense reports.
How it works
- Select the VAT rate: 19% (standard Regelsteuersatz) or 7% (reduced Ermäßigter Steuersatz).
- Choose the calculation direction: "Add VAT" to work from a net price, or "Remove VAT" to extract VAT from a gross price.
- Enter the amount in euros in the input field.
- The net price, VAT (MwSt) amount, and gross total are shown instantly.
- Optionally enter an item description and click "Add to Table" to log line items.
- The table accumulates entries and shows a running total with combined VAT.
Use cases
- Calculate the MwSt amount to include on a German invoice.
- Find the net price before VAT from a gross receipt or quote.

- Total multiple line items and see the combined VAT for a Umsatzsteuervoranmeldung (VAT return).
