Summary
Calculate the internal burst pressure rating of oil and gas well casing using the Barlow formula, and compute the safety factor against a test pressure.
How it works
- Enter the casing outer diameter (OD) in inches.
- Enter the nominal wall thickness (t) in inches.
- Select an API casing grade or enter a custom minimum yield strength (psi).
- The Barlow burst pressure is P = (2 × t × Y) / OD, where Y is the minimum yield strength.
- Inner diameter is computed as ID = OD − 2t.
- Optionally enter an actual test or operating pressure to compute the safety factor = burst rating / test pressure.
Use cases
- Verify that a selected casing string can handle anticipated formation pressures.
- Compare burst ratings across API grades (J-55, L-80, P-110, Q-125) for a given OD and wall.
- Compute the design safety factor for regulatory or well-engineering documentation.
- Quickly check ID clearance alongside the burst rating during casing program design.
- Evaluate the effect of wall thickness on burst capacity when selecting weight-per-foot.
- Support well integrity assessments by determining rated versus actual test pressure.
